The Teach 2 the Core project aims to build a “Pay It Forward” community. We will establish online mentorships between inner-city students in college and those who are working towards a high school degree. The younger group will be provided with free tutoring services and in turn, they will be encouraged to donate time towards a community beautification project.
Teach 2 the Core seeks to become a guide, leader and resource throughout Philadelphia’s inner-cities. We would like to instill community members with a heightened sense of self-worth and activism through the values of education and community service.
Teach 2 the Core’s mentors are comprised of students from Northeastern University’s Torch Scholars Program. These students are from inner-cities who are the first in their families to attend college. They have committed to volunteering their time to provide an online mentor-ship with high school and elementary students throughout West Philadelphia. In return for free tutoring the younger students will be encouraged to donate time towards a community beautification project.
In addition to our tutoring services, students enrolled in the program will also have the opportunity to participate in Teach 2 the Core events including field trips to the museum, galleries, health and cooking classes, physical education, and sporting events.
Our Winter 2015 events include a “Literacy Day” where participants and members of the community can attend events and seminars designed around promoting literacy. We will also be hosting a physical fitness day with Outlaw Fitness.
